The theme of this week's blog is short and simple - helping your body more effectively burn fat. Or, to be more specific, helping your body utilise fat as a primary energy source for exercise.
Put simply, there is one overriding reason why this is so difficult to do for Iriah people. Diet. Our diet is very high in foods with high acidity levels. All foods are either acid or alkaline in nature (known as the ph of foods), or fall somewhere between the two. A healthy diet should contain more alkaline foods than acidic ones. Unfortunately, that's not the case for most of us. The typical Irish diet is highly acidic - beef, chicken, eggs, cream, hard cheese, breads, sweets, butter, chocolate, tea, coffee, beer, processed foods etc. The list goes on.
The key for those trying to lose weight is this. As well as being at the root of many conditions and diseases, a highly acidic diet actually decreases the body's ability to use fat as fuel. This is one of the spin-offs of our diet. So, if you are one of those who feels frustrated because your exercise does not seem to be yielding the results you want, consider your diet further. By changing to alkaline foods and cutting back on acidic ones, you will be helping your body burn fat far more effectively.

Here's a further tip that works a treat - every morning before you eat or drink anything else, squeeze the juice of half a fresh lemon into a glass of warm water. Lemon juice is highly alkaline and the ingestion of this on an empty stomach can turn your body from an acidic to alkaline state from the off. Mind, you can't then just go out and stuff yourself full of acidic foods!
Next week - a sample weekly exercise schedule. See you at bootcamp. Paul
